Mini Quarterlife Crisis in My Head

February 22nd, 2021 — Today I learned that one of my good friends has made solid plans for marriage! This friend is a fresh graduate in his mid-20s who has just started his career in healthcare, and is already thinking about having children! I know… I know… we’re all in different phases of our lives and shouldn’t compare, but I can’t help but feel overwhelmed with all these emotions. Here I am, approaching my late 20s, unemployed and single…

It’s funny how the day unfolded because later in the evening, a friend from across the world reached out to me and we caught up over a video call. We were both in the same phase of waiting for the results of our job application and had conversations that revolved around our future plans. We then touched on the topic of dating, and I ended up implying feeling behind in the dating field. Her response made my evening and lifted my mood, for she expressed how she had zero thoughts of marriage at least within the next 5 years. Instead, she was excited about what the future holds for her, steering the conversation to our goals and passion in life. The old me would feel that it’s inappropriate or weird to open up and be vulnerable to someone who isn’t from my usual circle of friends, but this has allowed us to connect at a deeper level.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, I want you to know that this is just temporary and soon, everything will fall into place. How do you find your source of motivation in times like this? Let me know in the comments below! For me, I find myself constantly seeking bouts of motivation (my motivation for today) from multiple social media influencers, attempting to chase after that productive lifestyle. Personally, this feels like unhealthy motivation, so I hope this wouldn’t be the case when I start working and have a fixed lifestyle.

Thank you for reading this far into my post. I shall sign off here.

Homemade wontons — a Chinese dumpling dish that I miss dearly. The reason behind this attempt was to satisfy my cravings after reading Alice’s (alicehalim.medium.com) blog, as she reflected on her life in Shanghai.
