Note To Self

Feb 2021 — — I finally feel (slightly) free from the neverending tasks that kept me enslaved to the Journey. And so, I decided to immerse myself in something new — writing. As someone easily inspired, the inspiration to write stemmed from reading “Show Your Work by Austin Kleon”, a good read recommended by Ali Abdaal. A close friend of mine also encouraged me to transform my new-found inspiration into actions, for she was beginning a similar journey to sharing her work.

There are many reasons as to why I started writing — one of them was to be better at writing. Just a few months back, I struggled with drafting a personal statement for a job application. Writing is a skill that I have returned to my high school teachers and have never needed throughout my university years. I recall using a thesaurus and finding alternate phrases in hopes of making my essay sound sophisticated, but my work ended up looking like that of a 12-year-old schoolgirl. That’s when I realized some serious work needs to be done to improve my writing skills.

A few weeks ago, I stumbled across Barack Obama’s medium page, which led to the discovery of this beautiful platform. After reading the book, it dawned upon me that perhaps by sharing my work online, I will hold myself accountable for writing, while also creating a personal space online for me to look back many years down the road. Here’s a snippet from the book that I really liked and felt the need to pen it down:

“Carving out a space for yourself online, somewhere where you can express yourself and share your work, is still one of the best possible investments you can make with your time.” — — Andy Baio

As of now, there is no clear theme to my blog. But I find the idea of “being an amateur who shares her journey out in the open while learning in front of others so that others can learn together” very intriguing. Perhaps that’ll be my theme for the next couple of blog posts. I hope this inspires many others to do so. Cheers! 🥂

Souq Waqif — situated in the center of Doha stands a marketplace (souq) noted for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to dozens of restaurants and Shisha lounges. (Source: Wikipedia). Here, I savored some hummus and pita bread in an outdoor tented booth while being surrounded by sights of locals smoking Shisha — an integral part of the Middle Eastern culture.
